A Brief Theology of Money

Why Bitcoin?

Money is amoral, in and of itself it has no moral value. The problem is, like everything else, sin affects every aspect of our world including our money system. When new money is printed it devalues the current money that we have earned in our jobs. This means that it devalues the sacred work that we have done to bring the shalom, or the wholeness of God, into the earth. Inflation affects the poor the most and Jesus tells us to care for the poor. Opting out of a system as much as we can, that we believe oppresses the poor, is one small way that we care for the poor and fight for justice. Currencies failing because of hyperinflation around the world has inflicted remarkable damage onto families and businesses. In many nations, what someone may have worked for a lifetime to earn, disappears overnight because a currency is hyper inflated. We want to honor God by participating in a more just form of finance which is why we not only receive Bitcoin for giving, but also hold it, or HODL it, as it is called in the Bitcoin community.

What about other cryptocurrencies?

We don't use other cryptocurrencies because they are fundamentally no different than our broken fiat system. A small group of people, with their own interests, can create as much or as little of their respective cryptocurrency as they would like to. This gives them the ability to manipulate the money supply and devalue our sacred work. Bitcoin is different because it is the only money in human history that cannot be manipulated. There is a terminal amount of 21 Million Bitcoin that will ever be mined. No other currency or a commodity, such as gold, can make that claim. We feel that we can honor God and redeem culture by participating in a more just form of money.

How is the Bitcoin secured?

Our Bitcoin is held in a joint custody, multi sig account through River Financial. This means, not one person can move any amount Bitcoin by themselves. It takes the approval of our board to move any Bitcoin into a different wallet or be transferred into fiat.

How do you receipt the Bitcoin?

For now, let us know when you give and we will receipt you immediately at current market price of your gift. We are working on a more robust solution and working with partners in the faith community that are also receiving and receipting Bitcoin to implement some best practices for tax purposes.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
